Light Refraction
Uses example of sphere on a checkerboard to show how light is refracted.
Ray Optics, Light Refraction s In the ray traced image above several clear glass spheres refract light from varied positions within a checkerboard tiled room
Refraction occurs when a light ray changes mediums
Light traveling from air and going into water would be an example
The speed of the light ray changes upon changing mediums
In almost every case the direction of the light ray changes also
In the picture above light rays change direction as they go from air into the glass spheres, and they change direction again when they exit the glass spheres and enter air
Here a single ray of light strikes a boundary between two mediums and is refracted
Here are descriptions for the terms in this diagram: The ray of light which travels through the incident, or first, medium and strikes the boundary, or interface, is called the incident ray
The ray of light which travels into the refracted, or second, medium and leaves the interface is called the reflected ray

A ray-traced scene Ray tracing is a general technique from of modelling the path taken by light by following of light as they interact with optical surfaces
The term is also applied to mean a specific algorithmic approach in, where mathematically-modelled visualisations of programmed scenes are produced using a technique which follows rays from the eyepoint outward, rather than originating at the light sources
As the scene is traversed by following in reverse the path of a very large number of such rays, visual information on the appearance of the scene as viewed from the point of view of the camera, and in lighting conditions specified to the software, is built up
Following rays in reverse is many orders of magnitude more efficient at building up the visual information than would be a genuine simulation of light interactions, since the overwhelming majority of light rays from a given light source do not wind up providing significant light to the viewers eye, but instead may bounce around until they diminish to almost nothing, or bounce off to infinity
A computer simulation starting with the rays emitted by the light source and looking for ones which wind up intersecting the viewpoint is not practically feasible to execute and obtain accurate imagery
