    Light Refraction
Uses example of sphere on a checkerboard to show how light is refracted.

  • Ray Optics, Light Refraction s In the ray traced image above several clear glass spheres refract light from varied positions within a checkerboard tiled room

  • Refraction occurs when a light ray changes mediums

  • Light traveling from air and going into water would be an example

  • The speed of the light ray changes upon changing mediums

  • In almost every case the direction of the light ray changes also

  • In the picture above light rays change direction as they go from air into the glass spheres, and they change direction again when they exit the glass spheres and enter air

  • Here a single ray of light strikes a boundary between two mediums and is refracted

  • Here are descriptions for the terms in this diagram: The ray of light which travels through the incident, or first, medium and strikes the boundary, or interface, is called the incident ray

  • The ray of light which travels into the refracted, or second, medium and leaves the interface is called the reflected ray

  • The above picture demonstrates the general behavior of a light ray as it travels from air into some transparent medium such as water or glass

    Ray tracing in Wikipedia
A overview non technical article on ray tracing also covering some history of
    the subject.

  • A ray-traced scene Ray tracing is a general technique from of modelling the path taken by light by following of light as they interact with optical surfaces

  • The term is also applied to mean a specific algorithmic approach in, where mathematically-modelled visualisations of programmed scenes are produced using a technique which follows rays from the eyepoint outward, rather than originating at the light sources

  • As the scene is traversed by following in reverse the path of a very large number of such rays, visual information on the appearance of the scene as viewed from the point of view of the camera, and in lighting conditions specified to the software, is built up

  • Following rays in reverse is many orders of magnitude more efficient at building up the visual information than would be a genuine simulation of light interactions, since the overwhelming majority of light rays from a given light source do not wind up providing significant light to the viewers eye, but instead may bounce around until they diminish to almost nothing, or bounce off to infinity

  • A computer simulation starting with the rays emitted by the light source and looking for ones which wind up intersecting the viewpoint is not practically feasible to execute and obtain accurate imagery

    Electromagnetic Spectrum
A NASA site listing the various wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation.

  • or is it? Radio waves, visible light, X-rays, and all the other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum are fundamentally the same thing, electromagnetic radiation

  • Radio waves, visible light, X-rays, and all the other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum are fundamentally the same thing

  • An Angstrom is equal to 0.0000000001 meters (10 -10 m in )! In the newer "" version of the metric system, we think of visible light in units of nanometers or 0.000000001 meters (10 -9 m)

  • In this system, the violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red light we know so well has wavelengths between 400 and 700 nanometers

  • This range is only a small part of the entire EM spectrum, so you can tell that the light we see is just a little fraction of all the EM radiation around us! By the time you get to the ultraviolet, X-ray, and gamma-ray regions of the EM spectrum, lengths have become too tiny to think about any more

    1999 Grammy Awards

  • Best Record contenders: Brandy and Monica, 'The Boy Is Mine'; Celine Dion, 'My Heart Will Go On'; Goo Goo Dolls, 'Iris'; Madonna, 'Ray of Light'; Shania Twain, 'You're Still the One.' Let's rule out the Goo Goo Dolls first, even though 'Iris, ' from the 'City of Angels' soundtrack, was a monster success

  • The duet by baby divas Brandy and Monica starts out catchily enough, but lacks the delightful naughtiness lent to it by the video

  • My pick: 'Ray of Light' The Grammy: 'My Heart Will Go On.' Best Album contenders: Sheryl Crow, 'The Globe Sessions'; Garbage, 'Version 2.0'; Lauryn Hill, 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'; Madonna, 'Ray of Light'; Shania Twain, 'Come on Over.' Crow's smooth rock is a perfect way to warm up a party, and glam Shirley Manson of Garbage is as edgy as ever, but Hill is a lock

  • My pick: 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' The Grammy: 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' Best Pop Album contenders: Eric Clapton, 'Pilgrim'; Celine Dion, 'Let's Talk About Love'; Natalie Imbruglia, 'Left of the Middle'; Madonna, 'Ray of Light'; Brian Setzer Orchestra, 'The Dirty Boogie.' Nanoptics, Inc., Fiberoptic Tutorial
History, theory and use of fiber optics.

  • In some cases, as many as 40-50 lenses may be used that can cause considerable optical aberration, light loss and ghost images

  • Nearly all endoscopes include two different types of optical fibers: one for use as an image guide and the other as a light guide

  • In addition to the transmission of light and images, optical fibers can be used for medical applications in surgery including fluorescence techniques of diagnosis and high intensity illumination utilizing guided laser light

  • Principles of Fiber Optics 2.1 Total Internal Reflection Total internal reflection (TIR) is the most important phenomenon for the guiding of light in optical fibers

  • Under the condition of total internal reflection, light can be completely reflected at a dielectric interface without any reflective coating

  • It is required for TIR that the ray of light be incidental on a dielectric interface from the high refractive index to the low refractive side

  • If a ray of light propagates at a certain angle, θ 1 (θ 1 c ) from a high refractive index medium (n 1 ) to a low refractive medium (n 2 ), a portion of light will be reflected back to Medium 1 and another part of light will be refracted into Medium 2 as shown in Figure 1-1(a)

    Time Travel Unusual
    Newton, Einstein, relativity and links.

  • That's what it's all about on this pages: Is it possible to travel through time, and if possible, under which circumstances? It will become very clear that the speed of light has got a major influence on the possibility of time traveling

  • An object should move faster than light speed to travel through time

  • That means that a ray of light or a bundle of electrons that is sent through a certain barrier arrives sooner at the other side of the barrier than if there wasn't a barrier

  • But when the speed of the train approaches the speed of light, the difference will become noticeable ('extreme' situations), and we would need Einstein's physics

  • It's based on the constant speed of light and the fact that speed isn't absolute; when a helicopter lifts off you can also assume it's the chopper that stands still and the earth that moves

  • The speed of light is constantly independent of the reference system of the observer

  • Whether you stand still or move at 50% of light speed, the ray of light will always move at an amazing 299 792, 458 km/sec

  • That sounds strange; we would think when you move at 50% of light speed along the ray of light, the measurement of that speed would be halved
