The Jewish/Civil Calendar Program -- Info
Interactive Web program that prints out Jewish and Civil calendars side-by-side.
Does not list holidays in either calendar. Source code available.
The Jewish/Civil Calendar Program – Some Information Some Background to the Program I originally wrote this program in the Icon programming language on a computer running UNIX
According to Jewish tradition, the year 1 of the Jewish calendar was the time of 'waste and void' referred to in Genesis 1.1
(in the Gregorian calendar -- of course this calendar did not exist at that time) He said: Let there be light! and creation began
How to use the Program The Jewish/Civil Perpetual Calendar accepts, at the prompt 'YEAR(S)', a year of the Jewish calendar, for example '5750', and produces on the screen a calendar of that year with a visually equivalent civil calendar opposite it for easy conversion of dates
The months of the civil year are abbreviated to JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC and of the Jewish calendar to NIS IYA SIV TAM AV ELU TIS HES KIS TEV SHE ADA AD2
The year 0 is not meaningful in either calendar
No date prior to 1 in the Jewish calendar can be entered
All civil dates are according to the Gregorian Calendar which first came into use in 1582 and was accepted in different places at different times

History of the Calendar
How different parts of the world made different kinds of clocks based on where
they lived and what kind of weather they had to predict.
in Daily Almanac for Search White Pages Editor's Favorites Infoplease Tools Career Center College Center New/Updated | Search: Infoplease Search: Biographies Society and Culture—Calendar & Holidays—CalendarsHistory of the Calendar The purpose of the calendar is to reckon past or future time, to show how many days until a certain event takes place—the harvest or a religious festival—or how long since something important happened
The earliest calendars must have been strongly influenced by the geographical location of the people who made them
But in warmer countries, where the seasons are less pronounced, the Moon became the basic unit for time reckoning; an old Jewish book says that “the Moon was created for the counting of the days.” Most of the oldest calendars were lunar calendars, based on the time interval from one new moon to the next—a so-called lunation
The calendar had to account for these yearly events as well
The Egyptian Calendar The ancient Egyptians used a calendar with 12 months of 30 days each, for a total of 360 days per year
Only once every 1, 460 years did their calendar year coincide precisely with the solar year

John Dee and the English Calendar: Science, Religion and Empire by Dr Robert Poole St Martin's College, Lancaster LA1 3JD, U.K
R.Poole@lancaster.ac.uk Preface This paper deals with the English rejection of the Gregorian calendar in 1583, seeking to set this episode in its cultural, political and intellectual context
It concentrates particularly upon the work of John Dee, whose treatise of advice to the queen on the calendar reform is almost the only one of his major writings which has not (as far as I am aware) been studied in any depth in published writings
I argue that Dee's calendar treatise offers important insights into his natural philosophy and provides the keystone of his vision of empire
John Dee and the English Calendar: Science, Religion and Empire The Gregorian reform of the calendar is familiar to historians of the early modern period, if only through those little notes that precede almost every work on the period advising the reader about the conventions used in old style and new style dating
The calendar of the Roman empire — the Julian calendar — had been adopted by the Christian church at the council of Nicaea in AD 325, the first of the general councils of the church
