With no needles involved, a mehndi artist uses a mudlike mixture of henna powder, tea, oils and lemon juice to paint a design on the skin, using either a paintbrush or a squeezable plastic pouch
Mehndi’s traditional style covers the hands and feet with delicate lace-like patterns of flowers, ivy and other designs
Rubbing lemon juice and sugar over the design ensures longer wear
Laura Dietrich, an artist who works at the beauty parlor, said that when she begins to paint a client, her mehndi design evolves as she paints

Creating Your Own Henna Patterns & Designs Before you actually apply the henna, you will want to have an idea in mind as to the pattern or design
This is probably the easiest way, but it also doesn't look as nice and is nowhere near as detailed as a hand-applied design
These shapes can be combined to create a very intricate pattern and a very beautiful henna design
This design can be done on the outside or the palm of the hand, or it could even be used in part anywhere else on the body
Once you get your design on paper, you have two options
You can do the design freehand and use your drawing as a guide for comparison, or you can trace the design using a sheet of carbon paper and transfer the pattern to the skin
Find your own style and you'll be creating your own patterns like a pro in no time! If you're just not comfortable drawing your own designs, you're not ready or just need a little inspiration, you can to get you started

OR you could get heavy tape (black electrical or duct tape-- I wouldn't recommend this for non-hairless areas) and draw designs out on it, cut the designs out, and then put it over your skin so that the designs are holes which will be filled with henna
