  • Some examples of popular traditional images used in mehndi designs are the peacock, which is the national bird if India, the lotus flower, and an elephant with a raised trunk, which is a symbol of good luck

  • 8 8 8 8 8 Mehndi - The Vital Ingredient in Any Wedding - by George Ahmed A traditional Indian / Pakistani wedding is one that lasts for many days

  • Many of our wedding traditions have now been taken up by the European or Western communities, such the decorating the house with lights and decorations a few days before the wedding, elaborate decoration of the wedding vehicle, be it a limousine, a Rolls Royce or a horse-carriage, and of course not forgetting the application of Mehndi or Henna on the hands and feet, (and sometimes on many other place!) of all involved in the wedding

  • Mehndi is not synonymous with the Western wedding but is now huge business in the Western world with the likes of Maddona, Darryl Hanna, Prince and Demi Moore to name just a few who have been seen in public with Mehndi tattoos on parts of their anatomies...and guess where they got the idea from? Mehndi is a short-term tattoo, and not something you are lumbered with for the rest of your life, just because someone had dared you, or were perhaps drunk or thought it was a great idea at the time! This is a tattoo you can have as often as you like, wherever you like and it is totally safe, and only lasts for a few days

henna body designs. Also contains information on the differences in designs from ...

  • What is Mehndi? Mehndi is the traditional art of adorning the hands and feet with a paste made from the finely ground leaves of the henna plant

  • Some scholars claim that the earliest documentations of henna use are found in ancient Indian texts and images, indicating that mehndi as an art-form may have originated in ancient India

  • Still others insist that the tradition of mehndi originated in North Africa and the Middle Eastern countries during ancient times

  • It is also possible that the similar use of henna for skin decoration in these regions arose independently and perhaps simultaneously, and this could account for the difficulty in pinpointing an exact birthplace of mehndi art

  • Generally, Arabic (Middle-eastern) mehndi features large, floral patterns on hands and feet, while Indian (Asian) mendhi uses fine lines, lacy, floral and paisley patterns covering entire hands, forearms, feet and shins; and African mehndi art is large, and bold with geometrically patterned angles

  • African mehndi patterns often use black henna (potentially very toxic) while Asian and Middle Eastern mehndi is often reddish brown (or orange)

  • It is also a common custom in many countries to step into the mehndi, or simply apply the paste without creating a pattern in order to cool, protect or treat the skin (sometimes referred to as a "henna-shoe")
