  • July 03, 2006 in Transportation | Edgewood Retail District Shuttle I've been interested in the free shuttles which operate various specialized routes in the city, particularly the route Georgia Tech runs, the shuttle from the train station to Atlantic Station and the shuttle from the Edgewood Retail District to East Atlanta Village, the train stations and Little Five Points

  • MMA, MP 15.49.3, N-16176 Public concern about the fate of shipwreck victims on Sable Island led to the first lifesaving station in 1801

  • Inside, the cold, wet survivor found firewood, food (suspended beyound the reach of rats) and directions to the nearest lifesaving station

  • Lifesaving Stations: The lifesaving communities were Sable's first permanant settlements

  • The entire coast could not be patrolled from a single station, so by 1895 there were 5 stations along the island's 44 km length

  • The Main Station had a Sailor's Home where shipwreck survivors could wait for the next steamer to Halifax

  • Now, the lighthouses are automatic, the Main Station in ruins

  • Little was heard of Gough during World War II, though a German commerce raider sheltered there in 1942 whilst making repairs, in similar circumstances to the raiders that sheltered at Post-war plans to site a weather station on Gough were shelved, as there were difficulties in recruiting staff

  • The South African Weather Bureau continue to operate the station to this day, and you can see Gough Island at their Web Site

  • Hatteras Island Rodanthe: Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station In 1873 Congress established the United States Life Saving Service to patrol the beaches looking for ships in distress along the treacherous North Carolina coast

  • Twelve Life Saving Stations were established - at seven mile intervals in an area known as Chicamacomico

  • The stations were patrolled by a crew of 5-10 men on foot or horseback

  • The most famous of these stations, the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station was built in 1874

  • Lifesaving Service/Coast Guard Station complexes on the Atlantic Coast

  • The main station (built in 1911) and the Fearing Shipwreck Exhibit are now museums

  • The older 1874 station contains the lifeboat used in now-famous rescues and other lifesaving equipment
